James' father James Snr was a solicitor During the 1840's.
James Jnr went to sea and eventually to Australia to seek his fortune in the goldfields. It was here that he met his wife Margaret, a Scottish widow (Mrs Leitch) with a daughter Helen. They were married in Sydney, NSW in January 1851 On hearing of the death of his mother, James returned to England in 1859. He returned to Australia on the ship 'SS Great Britain' which left Liverpool in July 1860. With him was his brother-in-law Thomas Dodd WRAGG, and sister Emily with a young family no doubt influenced by James that Australia offered much opportunity.
