     Er starb am 08.05.1941 beim Untergang des Hilfskreuzers (Auxiliary Cruiser) "Pinguin" im Indischen Ozean, 03°30' N / 57°48' O .
Der HSK "Pinguin" wurde nach 27minütigem Gefecht mit dem britischen schweren Kreuzer "HMS Cornwall" durch den Treffer einer 20,3 cm Granate in den Minenlagerraum zerrissen. Dort explodierten 130 Minen in einem fürchterlichen Knall. Gerettet wurden 60 Mann der Besatzung sowie 23 Gefangene. Die See behielt über 500 Seeleute. Das Frachtmotorschiff "Kandenfels" wurde gleich zu Beginn des 2.Weltkrieges zum Hilfskreuzer "Schiff 33" umgebaut. Das Schiff wurde erst während der ersten und einzigen Feindfahrt in HSK "Pinguin" umgetauft. Hauptoperationsgebiete waren der Indische Ozean, die Antarktis und Randgebiete Australiens. Die "Pinguin" war insgesamt 357 Tage unterwegs und legte dabei an die 59.188 sm zurück. Dabei wurden 28 Schiffe versenkt oder als Prise in die Heimat geschickt, was einer Gesamttonnage von 136.607 BRT entsprach. Hinzu kommen noch 4 Schiffe, die durch gelegte Minen vor Australien sanken.

Gúnter died 08.05.1941 in the sinking of the German auxiliary cruiser "Penguin" in the Indian Ocean, 03°30' N / 57°48' O. The HSK "Penguin" was blown apart after a 27 minute engagement with the British heavy cruiser "HMS Cornwall" , with a direct hit of a 10 inch shell into the mine storeroom. There where 130 mines in the storeroom and the ship was wrenched apart by a terrible explosion. 60 crew and 23 prisoners were rescued. The sea claimed over 500 sailors. The Penguin was originally the freight motor ship "Kandenfels" it was refitted immediately at the beginning of WWII as an auxiliary cruiser "ships type 33". The HSK "penguin" was on it's maiden voyage and had only been at sea for 357 days traversing a total of 59,188 nautical miles. During this time the Penquin was responsible for sinking / capturing 28 allied ships a total tonnage of 136,607 BRT.
And her mines would claim a further 4 ships, around Australia.
