Individual Note:
"Dad was brought up by Grandma Ruth and her second husband John Broadbent who was always known as Granda Broadbent. He appears to have been a formidable character who had a very strong and lasting, good influence on dad. George Stanley was son of Charles and Ruth Wright of 7 William Street, Harrington.
Betty married Roland Brown. He was a US citizen who came across to Britain to get into the war before the USA joined us. He joined the RAF as a pilot and later when the US came in on the war he transferred over to the US Air Force. He was shot down somewhere over Europe and was a prisoner of war until the end of hostilieties. He came back to Britain where Betty was waiting for him. She had been in the RAF and that was how they met and married. Unfortunately she did not wait for him on her own and had a daughter to a local Harrington man. Roland said that there was no way his mother would accept the baby girl and she had to be adopted. This was done and she is now lost to us as we have no idea where she is. She was adopted by a couple in the Newcastle area. I think they were a solicitor or solicitor's clerk and his wife. It was always a cause for sorrow with my wother as mum and dad wanted to adopt her but there was no way they could do that at the end of the war. Dad was still in the navy until the end of 1946 and mum was living at home with her mother and father, 4 sisters and their children waiting for housing through the local council. Betty and Roland returned to Chicago and settled down having two daughters, Lynne and Carol
Aileen was the younger sister and she went over to stay with Betty and Roland. Betty encouraged her but my mother always thought it was encouragement with a thought that it would never happen. It did and Aileen eventually married William Gray, who had been married once before and had a daughter called Donna. I have met Donna, she stayed with us when our daughter married. she lives in Rifle, Colorado. Aileen and Bill had a son, Michael, and daughters Michelle and Meloldy. Michelle is married to Paul Hirsch who came from Germany after the war and they live in St Charles Illinois and Melody married Jim Reinsdorf and they live in Plainfield Illinois. Michelle has an adopted Korean son and Jim and Melody have one daughter, Lisa.
My immediate family? Well, Ernest married Mabel Telford, born 20th November 1923, daughter of William and Isabella Telford. William and Isabella lived at 26 Holden Road, Workington when mum and dad got married. He was a labourer in the coke ovens at Workington Iron and Steel works. He died when I was very young. I can just remember him. Isabella lasted longer and was a real character and lovely with it. Mum and dad married at Harrington Methodist Church on 14th August 1941 by special licence because it was war time and dad was home on leave from the Royal Navy (he joined in 1940). They had their first son, Eric Telford Wright on 14th July 1942. Eric is married to Annie Moordaf of Maryport and they live in Offerton Cheshire. Eric was a Police sergeant in Greater Manchester Police until her retired. I came along next, William Stanley (two grandfathers) born 20th April 1949. Last of all was my sister Audrey Blanche Isabella born 25th January 1952. She married Anthony (Tony) Potts of Oldham and lives in Whitehaven. They have two daughters, Deborah and Corrine. We all lived in Harrington until getting married. I married Lynne Margaret Smith daughter on Thomas Farquhar Smith and Claris Horne. (Lynne's brother has traced their family way back.) Lynne was born on 17th August 1950 and we married on 4th July 1970. We have two children, our son Andrew Mark born 21st July 1971 who is married to Sarah Batham and lives in Penrith and our daughter Caroline born 11 April 1975 who is married to Davinder Madaher who is from Southhampton. They met in New York where they were both working for a fashion design company as textile designers. They live in Littlethorpe, Leicestershire and have two children, Naomi Grace who was born 21 November 2005 and Caleb William born 4th September 2007. I joined the police force in Cumbria on 5th July 1968 and retired on 1st April 1999 with the rank of Sergeant. (Lots of stories there.)
Ernest Tyson died on 1st September 1988 in West Cumberland Hospital of a heart attack after an operation to repair an aennurism, is that spelt right? Anyway, Mabel lived until 14 July 2006 when she died from heart failure at the age of 83. Dad began playing church organ when a young boy, taught by Bill Wright, son of Ruth and Charles. at the age of 15 he was organist at Harrington Methodist Church and played there until he died. He played organs all over the world and was a very competant organist. He was an electrician working all his life for the Steel works at Moss Bay, Workington. He was in the Royal Navy from 1940 until 1946 serving on HMS Renown, a famous battle cruiser, until 1944 when he transferred to HMS Venerable, an aircraft carrier built at Cammel Laird, Birkenhead, Liverpool. Dad was with the Venerable when it did it's sea trials checking the electrical fittings on board, especially the Search Lights etc. He was a chief petty officer when the war finished. He travelled to every corner of the world crossing every ocean except the Pacific where he did sail but never went right across. He never travelled out of the country again except to visit his two sisters in the USA on two occasions. He had seen enough of the world, he said, and prefered to see more of Britain. He was a major influence on my life and I still miss him. He was a wonderful man with a wonderful sense of humour and would help anyone in need, even if it was not convenient. He was a lover of crosswords and any puzzle that I would give up on. He has a very practical mind and could always reason his way out of any crisis, once he had stopped panicing. A great family man. Mum was the consumate housewife of the 1940's staying at home looking after her children until we were grown up when she got a little job as a dinner lady. Both she and dad were very close and the bottom of her world dropped out when dad died. She never really recovered.
